Community Notes: Meta Invites All Users to Test New Fact-Checking System
Meta has begun inviting all users to participate in testing its Community Notes fact-checking system, according to Meta. In the current trial, users who are not yet approved note authors can still express their judgment by liking or disliking notes, and notes can be supplemented with additional annotations, with the aim of fostering community-driven information integrity. For now, the Community Notes feature on platforms like Facebook remains limited to users in the United States.
Meta reports more than 70,000 contributors have joined the programme, collectively producing over 15,000 notes, but only around 6% have been published publicly, reflecting strict quality controls in an early experimental phase. The initiative is designed to increase the credibility and practical value of annotations, while also testing a notification system that alerts users who previously engaged with a post when a Community Note is added or updated.
The design mirrors X’s Community Notes, prompting debate about whether removing traditional fact-checking might weaken defences against misinformation, as Meta seeks to balance transparency and participatory governance. 11 September 2025.
