X Launches ‘About This Account’ Tool to Boost Transparency and Fight Fakes
X has begun rolling out a new feature called “About this account” to enhance platform transparency and curb the proliferation of fake accounts. The tool publicly displays background details such as a user’s location, the region where the account was created, and how many times the handle has been changed.
According to product lead Nikita Bier and user reports, the feature also indicates the country associated with an account and whether the user connected through the web interface or via a specific App Store version. The system balances privacy with accuracy through options that let users display either their precise country or a broader region/continent, and a VPN detection disclaimer may note that the listed country or region could be inaccurate.
This approach mirrors transparency initiatives on other platforms and aims to strengthen content authenticity by helping users assess the provenance of accounts behind posts they see. The rollout is staged, with current access limited to users viewing their own account information by tapping the “Joined” label on their profile page, and detailed data for other accounts may not yet be available.
