Judge orders release of teen accused in 2023 casino cyberattacks

A 17-year-old male who turned himself in to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police last week has been released to his parents after Family Court Judge Dee Smart Butler deemed him neither a flight risk nor a danger to the community. As a condition of release, he must stay in Clark County under close supervision and his access to cell phones and electronics is restricted; he is prohibited from using the internet unless for school purposes or when accompanied by a parent.

The teen faces charges including three counts of Obtaining and Using Personal Identifying Information of Another Person to Harm or Impersonate Person, one count of Extortion, one count of Conspiracy to Commit Extortion, and one count of Unlawful Acts Regarding Computers, with prosecutors seeking to have him tried as an adult and to add more charges.

The determination of whether he will be tried as an adult will be made at a November hearing, and if he is 17 now, he would have been 15 at the time of two casino attacks that occurred between August and October 2023. FBI search warrants were executed on the teen’s Illinois home in December 2023 and February 2025, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
