OpenAI’s Sora AI Video App Hits 1 Million Downloads in Under Five Days, Outpacing ChatGPT
OpenAI’s newly launched short-video platform “Sora” has surpassed one million downloads in less than five days, outpacing ChatGPT’s initial growth rate, according to Bill Peebles, the product lead for Sora. The app is currently available only in North America and operates on an invitation-only basis, with downloads accelerating rapidly.
Described by many as an “AI-powered TikTok,” Sora lets users input a text prompt and a Sora 2 model generates a ten-second AI-produced video, while the interface mirrors TikTok or Instagram Reels but with all content AI-generated. A feature called Cameo Mode allows users to upload likenesses and generate videos featuring themselves or others, a capability that has sparked debate about training-data provenance and licensing.
OpenAI has rolled out an update to give users more precise control over how their likenesses can be used and plans to offer rights holders tools to determine how their intellectual property can be referenced by the model.
