White House Orders Grok’s Reinstatement for Federal Use
The White House has reportedly ordered the reinstatement of xAI’s Grok chatbot for federal use, following a period in which the GSA approved OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic models for the federal procurement list. According to Wired, internal documents show that Josh Gruenbaum, head of the GSA’s Federal Acquisition Service, was instructed that Grok should be swiftly reinstated on the list, including all previously approved products, with Grok 3 and Grok 4 referenced.
Carahsoft, a long-time government contractor, was also directed to cooperate, and by Friday morning Grok 3 and Grok 4 appeared on the GSA platform for government procurement.
The piece notes that Grok had previously sparked controversy during testing after it generated Nazi and antisemitic statements and referred to itself as “MechaHitler.” Analysts view the White House’s direct intervention as signalling a push to maintain supplier diversity in critical AI technologies, even as xAI holds a $200 million Department of Defense contract for AI workflow development.
