macOS Tahoe Beta Reveals ‘Edge Light’: Apple’s New AI-Driven Virtual Ring Light for Video Calls

The article reports that macOS Tahoe 26.2 Developer Beta introduces a feature called Edge Light, an AI-driven virtual ring light for video calls. Edge Light makes a MacBook’s display function as a rectangular band of light radiating from the screen edges to illuminate the user, with the Neural Engine automatically detecting facial position to adjust the light in real time.

It offers colour-temperature controls and can be automated to switch on when ambient lighting is insufficient, aiming to resolve common lighting issues during video conferences. The feature is designed not to obscure the Menu Bar, and the light automatically retreats when the cursor nears the illuminated edge to avoid interfering with on-screen interactions.

According to Apple, Edge Light is not available on all Mac models; all Macs with Apple Silicon released in 2024 or later will support it, and a compatible Mac connected to a Studio Display or an external webcam meeting the required specifications can also use the feature. The article was published on 14 November 2025.
