Latvian health authority official and IT company head fined for data breach

According to Latvian Public Media, the Kurzeme Regional Court has overturned an earlier acquittal and found an official of a state institution guilty of disclosing confidential information, and a board member of an IT company guilty of inciting a public official to disclose it. The case involves former National Health Service (NVD) employee Edgars Goba and Renārs Kadžulis, head of the information technology company SOAAR.

On 17 September, the court imposed a fine of 25 minimum monthly salaries (€18,500) on the public official, plus a ban from holding positions in the public procurement commission for 1 year and 6 months, while Kadžulis was fined 15 minimum monthly salaries (€11,100). The decision follows an appeal against the previous verdict, which had found both defendants not guilty last November. Read more at Latvian Public Media.
