The Developer Win: GitHub Postpones Self-Hosted Runner Fee After Massive Community Outcry
According to GitHub, the platform originally announced that from 1 March 2026 it would charge an additional platform fee of USD 0.002 per minute for using self-hosted runners in GitHub Actions. Following a wave of strong backlash, GitHub postponed the billing change, acknowledging that feedback from developers had not been adequately considered.
The company also said that, beginning 1 January 2026, it would reduce prices for GitHub-hosted runners by up to 39 percent, and that it would continue investing in self-hosted runners to support complex enterprise environments. GitHub emphasised it will engage in deeper conversations with developers, customers and partners to shape the roadmap of GitHub Actions. In the near term, there will be no platform fee, as the company re-evaluates its approach and timing of future pricing changes, according to GitHub.
