RECENT complaints have emerged from owners of LG monitors about unwanted pop-up ads for McAfee installed via companion software that downloads automatically on Windows devices without user consent. This practice began in July 2025 and is a product of Microsoft's device metadata policy, which allows manufacturers to silently install software associated with their hardware. While the software is intended for monitor control, recent updates have introduced ad-serving features.
Users can use Group Policy to block these automatic downloads, although it may limit access to essential companion software. Warnings are issued that blocking this feature may cause usability issues for everyday users.
