GOOGLE Play’s Early Access programme is being abused by deceptive developers who exploit the lack of user reviews and public ratings to push users into external download routes. In this scam, apps are promoted via social media with promises of cash rewards, PayPal payouts, cryptocurrency, gift cards or casino winnings, but once installed the payout never materialises. Instead the apps flood devices with advertisements, apparently to monetise by ad-serving rather than delivering a legitimate app experience.
Bitdefender describes a pattern including “ghost casino” titles and fake social media ads that use deepfakes of well-known public figures to lure users. Common deceptive listings include Chicken Road and Ice Fishing, or variants of those names, and even trademark abuse such as “Grand Theft Auto V (Early Access)” that is subsequently renamed after indexing, misleading searchers who are directed to a false product.
Some listings reportedly achieve thousands of installs, and the deception appears to be repeated by a number of developers. The article notes that while this is a misuse of Google’s service and not necessarily illegal fraud, it represents a significant practical risk to users and to the integrity of Early Access as a feedback mechanism.
