Exposure Assessment Platforms Signal a Shift in Focus
Gartner says that Exposure Assessment Platforms (EAP) mark a formal shift away from traditional vulnerability management, moving toward continuous threat exposure management (CTEM) across cloud, on‑prem, and identity layers. In the inaugural Magic Quadrant for EAPs, Gartner evaluated 20 vendors for their ability to support continuous discovery, risk‑informed prioritisation, and integrated visibility, and to show how exposures accumulate and could be exploited in real environments.
The article notes that data from over 15,000 environments found 74% of identified exposures to be “dead ends” with no viable path to a critical system, a problem EAPs aim to address by focusing remediation on reachable, high‑impact attack paths. Gartner projects that organisations using this approach will reduce unplanned downtime by 30% by 2027. Platforms like XM Cyber are highlighted as leaders in attack graph‑based modelling within this new category.
The piece describes EAPs as consolidating discovery across environments, prioritising based on context, integrating exposure data into workflows, and supporting lifecycle tracking to show how fixes influence risk. According to Gartner, exposure assessment is now positioned as a core layer for securing, maintaining, and understanding environments, shifting the focus from counting vulnerabilities to proving safety against the attack paths that matter.
