LatAm Faces Double US Attacks as Ransomware and Infostealers Surge

LATAM now faces twice as many cyberattacks as the US, according to Check Point’s unpublished March 2026 threat report shared with Dark Reading, which shows Latin American organisations currently facing about 3,100 cyber threats per week, compared with just under 1,500 in the United States. Last year, researchers at Check Point tracked a 53% year-over-year rise in weekly cyberattacks in Latin America, underscoring a region-wide intensification of threats.

The data also highlights regional differences in attack types and initiation methods: ransomware and infostealer activity, for example, are more common in Latin America, while the US sees more attacks initiated via compromised websites and drive-by downloads. Specifically, 95% of malicious files in the US last month were delivered via the Web, whereas in Latin America the Web account for 26% and email for 74%.

The piece also notes a notable mix of sectors hit, including healthcare and financial services in Latin America, and references the 2025 Cybersecurity Report by the OAS and IDB to explain maturity scores averaging between 2 and 3 out of five.
