Beyond the Terminal: Zed Editor Integrates Google Gemini for AI-Powered Coding
Zed Editor has integrated Google Gemini, enabling native access to the Gemini CLI code generation tool from within the editor in its latest release. Gemini CLI allows developers to communicate with Google’s AI models via the command line, unlocking a range of capabilities such as instant code generation and refactoring by describing functionality in natural language.
The update also provides on-demand explanations when developers encounter confusing code or errors, and supports natural conversation in the terminal for general queries. An agent-following feature offers real-time transparency as Gemini reads and edits multiple files, with a consolidated interface that resembles a pull request review for accepting, rejecting, or adjusting proposed changes.
Developers can extend Gemini’s context beyond the local file system by directing it to URLs containing documentation or API specs, enabling retrieval of external references. Zed had previously introduced its own AI tool, Zed AI powered by Claude, and the editor supports custom integration with other AI services, while also offering an option to disable all AI features to protect privacy.
