MICROSOFT has removed a PC-to-PC migration feature from Windows 11 Insider Preview builds after testing it since July 2025. The change was recorded in the company’s Windows Insider release notes for builds 26100.9539 and 26200.9539. The feature, which operated through the Windows Backup app, was intended to help users move data to a new computer but never reached a stable Windows 11 release.
According to the report, the tool could transfer personal documents, basic settings and some personalisation options, but not installed applications, integrated OneDrive files, saved passwords or login details. It also did not reproduce registry entries, application settings or authorisation tokens, meaning it could not provide a complete system migration. Microsoft is now directing users towards the standard Windows Backup and Restore tools.
These can back up selected folders, system settings and limited account data for restoration after signing in with the same Microsoft account on the new device. OneDrive can also back up the Desktop, Documents and Pictures folders. The report notes that both approaches depend on cloud storage and says the free allowance may be inadequate for a substantial migration, potentially requiring a Microsoft 365 subscription.
