The Biology Factory: NVIDIA and Lilly’s $1B Bet on AI Drug Discovery
On 14 January 2026, NVIDIA announced a five-year alliance with Eli Lilly underpinned by a projected $1 billion investment to establish the inaugural AI Co-Innovation Lab, alongside a collaboration with Thermo Fisher to turn research facilities into automated, high-efficiency data factories.
The push centres on expanding NVIDIA’s BioNeMo platform to accelerate AI-driven drug discovery, with plans to integrate the platform with the Vera Rubin architecture supercomputers to create a scientist-in-the-loop, continuous learning ecosystem where AI conceives molecular designs and autonomous robotics synthesize and test them. The partnership will also employ NVIDIA Omniverse to build digital twins of manufacturing facilities, optimise supply chains and production workflows in a virtual environment.
NVIDIA has updated BioNeMo with an RNAPro Model for predicting RNA structures, a ReaSyn v2 Model to predict synthesizability and keep AI designs chemically viable, and BioNeMo Recipes to standardise training and deployment of biological models. To enable total laboratory automation, the two firms will embed NVIDIA DGX Spark edge computing and NVIDIA NeMo agentic AI into instrumentation, enabling edge reasoning and autonomous workflow orchestration.
