UK Police and Apple team up to cut iPhone thefts by 18%

The UK Metropolitan Police and Apple have collaborated to enhance security measures for stolen iPhones, making them less appealing to thieves. Key initiatives include improved technical protections in iOS that require biometric authentication for critical device changes and sharing identifiers of stolen devices between Apple and law enforcement. This partnership has coincided with a reported 18% reduction in phone thefts in London.

Possible issues raised include privacy concerns regarding data sharing and risks of wrongful theft reports leading to user lockouts. The Met is advocating for similar measures across all phone manufacturers and mobile operators.
