Beyond Translation: Google Translate Adds a Gemini-Powered Language Tutor

Google Translate has been updated with expanded Gemini AI capabilities to serve as a language-learning companion in addition to translation, according to Daily CyberSecurity. The new feature creates simulated dialogue scenarios and offers personalised exercises based on the learner’s target language and goals, with progress tracked through checkpoints and milestones.

At present, language support is limited, focusing mainly on English and select European languages, with English speakers able to practice Spanish or French, and learners of English able to study Spanish, French, and Portuguese. Google says more languages will be gradually added, while the real-time conversation translation now detects both participants’ languages (more than 70) and enhances naturalness, intonation, pauses and fluidity.

The update also improves performance in noisy environments and has launched in the United States, India, and Mexico, with expansion to further regions planned soon. August 28, 2025.
