The Exit Strategy: Microsoft Finally Grants Admins a Way to Uninstall Copilot
Microsoft has introduced a new Group Policy in Windows 11 Beta/Dev Build 26200.7535 that lets IT administrators fully remove Microsoft Copilot, provided several conditions are met. The system must have both Microsoft Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot installed, the user must not have manually installed Copilot, and Copilot must have remained dormant with no user launches for at least 28 days.
When these criteria are satisfied, administrators can apply the policy to perform a complete removal, though users can still reinstall Copilot afterwards, meaning IT cannot currently ban installation or use on a permanent basis. The policy is aimed at enterprise environments, reflecting the corporate nature of Microsoft 365 Copilot, and is not available to individual consumers.
The relevant Group Policy path is User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Windows AI -> Remove Microsoft Copilot App. This development follows corporate feedback and marks a targeted mechanism for organisations wishing to excise Copilot from managed Windows deployments.
