Google shares workarounds for auth failures on ChromeOS devices

Google has published workarounds for authentication failures on ChromeOS devices that are preventing some users from signing into Clever and ClassLink accounts. The glitches affect devices running version 16328.55.0 with Chrome browser version 139.0.7258.137, and are disrupting Single Sign-On for Clever and ClassLink, which are used across thousands of schools.

In the meantime, Google has offered two temporary fixes: rollback to the previous M138 ChromeOS version, or alter the LoginAuthenticationBehavior setting to use Authentication via the default GAIA flow. Clever warned users that 2-Step Verification processes may also be impacted for some users. Engineers are testing a fix, with an ETA for the version containing the fix not yet available, and an update promised by Thursday, 28 August 2025 17:30 US/Pacific.
