OpenAI to Show Ads in ChatGPT for Logged-In U.S. Adults on Free and Go Plans
OpenAI said it would begin showing ads in ChatGPT to logged-in adult U.S. users on Free and Go plans in the coming weeks, marking a new revenue approach for the AI firm. According to The Hacker News, ads will appear at the bottom of conversations and will be clearly labelled, with users able to turn off personalised advertising if they choose.
OpenAI stresses that ads will not influence chatbot responses and that user data and conversations are kept private from advertisers, with users able to learn why they are seeing specific ads or dismiss them. The rollout will initially involve testing ads at the bottom of answers when a relevant sponsored product or service is identified in the current chat, and accounts that indicate the user is under 18 will be excluded during the test.
Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, noted on X that the company will not accept money to influence responses, emphasising a preference for a viable model that supports broad access to AI technology.
