ASAHI Linux has announced progress in bringing support for Apple’s M3-series chips, with the first M3 platform code now merged upstream in Linux kernel 7.2. After extensive reverse engineering, developers report that many functions already present on M1 and M2 devices are starting to work on M3 hardware. However, several major areas remain incomplete.

For ordinary users, the practical path to access these features is still via Fedora Asahi Remix, while the M3-specific installer remains a work in progress and these Macs are not yet fully within the project’s supported range.

What works and what doesn’t are clarified by the project’s feature-support table. Functional aspects include Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, NVMe storage, PCIe, CPU frequency and idle management, and audio peripherals such as keyboards, touchpads, speakers, and microphones, with suspend/sleep supported and hardware-accelerated video decoding available. The webcam status varies by model, functioning on the 14‑ and 16‑inch M3 Pro/Max MacBook Pro but not consistently on the M3 iMac, M3 MacBook Pro, or M3 MacBook Air.

The most significant gaps lie with USB, Thunderbolt, GPU, and display support: the ACE3 USB control scheme requires further development, and full Thunderbolt is not yet underway. GPU and DCP display-controller support remain incomplete, so high-performance 3D acceleration and complete display functionality (main display, brightness, DisplayPort Alt Mode, HDMI) are not expected at this stage.
