New Android Call Scam Protection Pauses Calls for 30 Seconds During Financial App Use
According to Google, Android’s call-scam protection is being expanded through Google Play Services to safeguard users during sensitive conversations involving financial or payment apps. The system first checks whether the incoming number is a known contact; if not, it proceeds to determine whether the user has opened a supported financial application, and if such an app is detected, a protective alert is triggered.
When suspicious activity is detected, the feature automatically pauses the call or screen sharing for 30 seconds, giving the user a moment to think independently before taking further action; a mandatory 30-second delay has been added to counter scammers who pressure victims. Initial supported financial apps include Cash App and JPMorgan Chase, with more to be added over time, and the rollout is occurring gradually in the United States for Android 11 or later.
Call-scam protection began pilot testing earlier this year in the United Kingdom, where Google says it has already helped thousands of users block fraudulent calls and avoid significant financial losses. The article is dated 5 December 2025.
