Canada Says Hackers Tampered With ICS at Water Facility, Oil and Gas Firm
The SecurityWeek report, dated 30 October 2025, highlights that the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security has warned CISOs that hacktivists are increasingly targeting internet-exposed industrial control systems. According to the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security, recent incidents include hackers tampering with water pressure valves at a water facility, resulting in degraded service for the local community, and triggering false alarms at an oil and gas company by tampering with an automated tank gauge.
The agency also describes an attack on a farm in which attackers altered temperature and humidity settings in a grain-drying silo, potentially creating unsafe conditions. It notes that such actors often target internet-accessible and poorly secured ICS to gain media attention or to discredit organisations, and that there are at least 100,000 internet-exposed ICS devices worldwide. The alert also provides high-level security recommendations and urges victims to report incidents to both the agency and police.
