AI vs. Authenticity: Cameo Sues OpenAI Over Sora’s ‘Cameo’ Deepfake Feature
Cameo has filed a trademark lawsuit against OpenAI over its Sora “Cameo” deepfake feature, arguing that OpenAI’s use of the name infringes its federally registered trademark. According to Reuters, Cameo claims OpenAI “willfully misappropriating an established and federally registered trademark” and that there is a “likelihood of consumer confusion,” causing irreparable harm to Cameo’s brand.
Cameo CEO Steven Galanis said the dispute was pursued after OpenAI refused to stop using the name, despite attempts to resolve the matter amicably. OpenAI has responded that no one can own the word “Cameo,” and a spokesperson said they are reviewing the complaint but disagree that exclusive ownership of the word can be claimed.
The filing alleges that OpenAI goes beyond naming infringement by using deepfake likenesses to offer its own celebrity cameo services, referencing figures such as Mark Cuban and Jake Paul, while Cameo’s platform offers personalized videos from real celebrities such as Jon Gruden or Lisa Vanderpump. The article notes that Sora’s feature enables users to embed their own likeness into AI-generated videos, prompting ongoing scrutiny of training data and legality. 30 October 2025.
