University of Pennsylvania says it wasn’t hacked after a vulgar email was sent to campus community

The University of Pennsylvania says it wasn’t hacked after a vulgar email was sent to members of its campus community, and the university is working to identify the source of the fraudulent message. According to CBS News Philadelphia, Penn told them the university was not hacked, though officials are investigating the origin of the email. The subject line read “We Got Hacked” and the message included explicit language urging recipients to “stop giving money” to the university.

The email was sent from a variety of Penn-affiliated accounts, including from the Graduate School of Education and purporting to come from several senior staff members across the university, with official @upenn[.]edu addresses used in multiple messages. TechCrunch reports additional details on the email itself, including a redacted screenshot and notes on recipients receiving the message several times from different senders.
