Tap to Pay on iPhone Expands to Five New European Countries
According to Apple, Tap to Pay on iPhone has been extended to five more European markets, namely Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Monaco, and Norway, enabling local merchants to accept payments through iPhone. The UK-based fintech SumUp announced support for Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Norway, though Monaco will rely on other partners since SumUp does not operate there.
Among the five new markets, Norway features the broadest integration, with more than six payment platforms, including PayPal and Stripe, having announced adoption of Apple’s NFC-based payment technology. Merchants can turn the iPhone into a payment terminal that supports Apple Pay, Visa, Mastercard, and other contactless cards, with transactions processed through the device’s built-in Secure Element chip and no external readers or dedicated hardware required.
As of now, Tap to Pay on iPhone is available in 43 countries and regions worldwide, and platforms must sign commercial agreements with Apple and cover related fees to activate the feature. Looking ahead, the service is poised to accelerate mobile payments adoption as more markets and platforms embrace it.
