US Crypto Bust Offers Hope in Battle Against Cybercrime Syndicates
A massive US seizure of cryptocurrency linked to a Southeast Asia cybercrime syndicate has been described as a meaningful signal in the fight against cyber-enabled fraud and human trafficking. On 14 October, the US Department of Justice, with the Drug Enforcement Agency, the Department of State and other agencies, announced the seizure of 127,271 bitcoin held in unhosted wallets and the indictment of Chen Zhi, founder and chairman of the Prince Holding Group, on conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering.
The seized coins, stored in 25 wallets, are valued at more than $14 billion, with a figure of nearly $15 billion cited on the day of the announcement. According to the DOJ filing, the 127,271 bitcoins were held in unhosted wallets whose private keys were personally held by Chen Zhi, and the case is framed as one of the most significant strikes against cyber-enabled financial crime.
The seizure, which represents about 0.6% of the 19.9 million existing bitcoins, is described by experts as a positive development for both law enforcement and the cryptocurrency industry, though the direct market impact may be limited.
