Passwordless Future: Microsoft Edge 142 Rolls Out Cross-Platform Passkey Sync

On 4 November 2025, Microsoft Edge v142.0 was released with cross-platform passkey synchronization, enabling users to reuse their passkeys across multiple devices without repeated setup. The feature aims to simplify authentication by allowing passkeys stored in Edge to be used across Windows 10 or 11, provided the user is signed into a Microsoft account.

When users enable password and key synchronization, they are prompted to create a dedicated PIN for all subsequent passkey logins, adding a layer of protection against unauthorised access. The article notes that passkeys are designed as secure credentials that are typically registered per device, with synchronization offering greater usability.

There is also mention of a potential third-party browser extension that could allow other browsers to access passkeys stored in a user’s Microsoft account, potentially enabling cross-browser authentication. This development is framed as a convenience advancement in passkey technology, rather than a change to the underlying security model.
