Illinois Department of Human Services tightens map security after data incident

The Illinois Department of Human Services says internal planning maps containing details on Division of Rehabilitation Services customers and Medicaid/Medicare Savings Programme recipients were mistakenly made public due to incorrect privacy settings.

The maps were used for internal resource planning and were created on a mapping website, with the exposed data including names, addresses, case numbers, case status, referral source information, region and office information, and whether individuals were DRS recipients. Approximately 32,401 Division of Rehabilitation Services customers were impacted, and around 672,616 Medicaid and Medicare Savings Programme recipients were affected.

The maps containing DRS customer information were publicly accessible from April 2021 through September 2025. Read more at KHQA. According to KHQA, the department is tightening map security after the data security incident.
