RIP Twitter.com: X Retires Old Domain, Forcing Passkey Reset by Nov 10

Elon Musk’s social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has announced that it will permanently retire the old domain Twitter[.]com, which previously redirected to X[.]com. Once the old domain is deactivated, users will not be able to access posts or data via Twitter[.]com links, and bookmarks or shares will require manual updating to X[.]com.

The transition will also require users to unlink and re-register their passkeys, as the existing keys are tied to the deprecated Twitter[.]com domain and will not function under X[.]com, according to the X security team. If users fail to rebind their passkeys, login disruption could occur, though they may remove their passkey and rely on two-factor authentication methods such as numeric verification codes.

The article notes that X’s passkey system has had reliability issues, advising users to register both a passkey and a numeric 2FA option to ensure a backup method is available should login problems arise.
