Inside Gen 13: how we built our most powerful server yet

CLOUDFLARE’S Gen 13 servers build on the FL2 software rewrite to deliver significantly higher compute density and efficiency. The machines feature an AMD EPYC 9965 Turin 192-core processor, 768 GB of DDR5-6400 memory, and 24 TB of PCIe 5.0 NVMe storage across three drives, with dual 100 GbE NICs to match the boosted compute.

Gen 13 offers up to 2x the throughput of Gen 12, a 50% improvement in performance per watt, and up to 60% higher throughput per rack, alongside 2x memory capacity and 1.5x storage capacity, plus 4x network bandwidth. In memory terms, Cloudflare populates all 12 channels with 12x 64 GB DDR5-6400 RDIMMs, delivering about 614 GB/s of peak bandwidth per socket and maintaining a 4 GB per core ratio.

The storage move to PCIe 5.0 NVMe with front-drive bay enhancements increases capacity from 16 TB to 24 TB and supports up to ten additional U.2 drives, while ongoing PCIe encryption and DC-SCM 2.0 management continue to bolster security and manageability. Gen 13 is also designed for two double-width PCIe add-in cards and maintains a 2U chassis form factor with enhanced cooling to handle the higher thermal load.
