Microsoft DNS Outage Disrupts Azure and Microsoft 365 Services Worldwide

Microsoft experienced a widespread DNS outage on 29 October 2025 that disrupted Azure and Microsoft 365 services worldwide. The disruption began around 16:00 UTC and was attributed to DNS configuration issues that crippled connectivity across Microsoft’s global infrastructure, affecting both enterprise and consumer platforms such as Xbox Live, Minecraft, Microsoft Copilot, and Outlook add-ins.

According to Downdetector, Azure logged over 16,600 user reports and Microsoft 365 nearly 9,000 complaints at the incident’s peak, with thousands of users unable to access key portals and admin centres. Microsoft confirmed the issue stemmed from DNS problems affecting its internal infrastructure, later attributing the outage to an inadvertent Azure Front Door configuration change.

In response, the company began rerouting affected traffic to alternate healthy infrastructure, blocked changes to Azure Front Door services, and rolled back to the last known good configuration, while advising customers to use PowerShell or CLI for temporary access. By around 22:06 IST, traffic rerouting was underway and investigations into the root cause continued, underscoring the cascading effects of DNS-level failures on modern cloud services.
