Windows 11’s New Full-Screen Prompts for Microsoft 365
Windows 11 is introducing a new full-screen interface called the Second Out-of-Box Experience (SCOOBE) in the latest Developer and Insider Preview builds to remind users to renew their Microsoft 365 subscriptions. The SCOOBE prompts appear after a system reboot and block access to the desktop until the user accepts or dismisses Microsoft’s promotional offers, such as enabling backups through OneDrive.
According to Microsoft, this interface will surface if a subscription issue arises, for instance when an automatic renewal payment cannot be processed; in such cases, users can review and update their payment methods directly from the prompt. In scenarios where there is no active Microsoft 365 subscription, SCOOBE may still appear occasionally, encouraging the user to subscribe and sign in via OneDrive.
There is a silver lining, however, as Microsoft has provided a way to disable these interruptions: Settings → System → Notifications → Additional Notifications, and turn off the “Second Out-of-Box Experience” option. The article notes there is no absolute guarantee SCOOBE will appear in the final release, though it is likely to reach the stable version. 15 September 2025.
