IPFire 2.29 Released with Enhanced Intrusion Prevention System Reporting

The IPFire project has released version 2.29, Core Update 198, marking a significant milestone in the open-source firewall’s evolution. According to IPFire, the update brings transformative improvements to the Intrusion Prevention System and enhanced reporting capabilities that change how network administrators monitor and respond to security threats.

Real-Time Email Notifications alert administrators whenever security events exceed a defined threshold, while Scheduled PDF Reports provide daily, weekly, or monthly summaries suitable for archiving and management presentations. Remote Syslog Forwarding enables alerts to be sent to external syslog servers for off-device logging and long-term storage, creating forensic records that remain accessible even if the firewall is compromised.

The release also includes Suricata 8.0.1 integration with cached rules for near-instant startup, expanded protocol support, and improved memory handling, alongside enhanced ARM performance via the Vectorscan library. Additionally, the update modernises the toolchain to GCC 15.2.0, Binutils 2.42, and glibc 2.42, and updates more than fifty packages including BIND, cURL, nginx, Samba, and QEMU.
