DOGE Allegedly Uploaded SSA’s Live Numident Database to Unsecured Cloud Server

The article reports that DOGE allegedly replicated the live Numident database, the master file of Social Security numbers and personally identifiable information, into a cloud environment lacking independent security controls.

It cites a whistleblower, Charles Borges, SSA Chief Data Officer, who says DOGE personnel “gave themselves authorization” to copy the data, a move said to have occurred after DOGE’s inception in January 2025 and amid a March 20, 2025 temporary restraining order forbidding external access to live Social Security data. According to Borges, the cloud copy was approved in July 2025, despite SSA’s usual risk assessments and security testing procedures.

The disclosure also notes that more than 300 million Americans could be affected by exposure of the live Numident data. The piece frames these events as three escalating phases of unauthorized activity, including a replication of live data in April 2025 and the July 2025 cloud migration. The article, quoting Borges and other sources, underscores potential consequences such as identity theft, fraudulent benefits, and the need to re-issue SSNs if the data were exposed.
