Why Are YouTube View Counts Plummeting? The Surprising Reason Behind the Drop
Since August, numerous YouTube creators have reported a sharp decline in video view counts, with technology-focused channels some days seeing drops as high as 50%. The open-source filter list EasyList released an update on 11 August 2025 that added a rule targeting YouTube[.]com/api/stats/atr, a key Google API for logging video views, after which ad-blockers began blocking this API by default.
Once the API could no longer log views, YouTube lost the ability to record view statistics, leading to substantial drops in reported traffic across certain channels, with technology creators reportedly most affected due to higher ad-blocker adoption. For example, Linus Tech Tips’ TechLinked channel experienced a view-count decline approaching 50%, though the article notes this does not necessarily reflect actual watch time.
According to Google, the company has issued a response but its public statement remains vague, and it remains uncertain whether Google will resolve the issue with EasyList or seek alternative statistical methods, while cautioning that a prolonged inability to collect accurate view counts could distort YouTube’s recommendation algorithms.
