THE European Commission has fined Google €890 million for violating the Digital Markets Act (DMA) by favoring its own services in search results and restricting app developers from directing users to alternative purchasing options outside the Play Store. This marks Google's first DMA fines, adding to a total of €10.38 billion in various penalties over two decades. The fines consist of €460 million for self-preferencing and €430 million for prohibiting steering practices.
Despite this, the Commission noted constructive dialogue with Google and ongoing efforts for compliance, giving the company 60 days to adjust. Google has rejected the findings and may challenge the fines in court, arguing that complying would degrade user experience.
