A New Era for AI Coding: OpenAI’s Codex Gets a Major Update
OpenAI has announced a major Codex update, introducing a new Visual Studio Code extension and synchronization across the web and terminal. Subscribers to ChatGPT Plus or ChatGPT Pro can now access Codex for every build, whether via the extension, web, or the terminal, with everything linked through ChatGPT accounts to maintain state across local and cloud environments. Seamless Local ↔ Cloud Handoff has been added to delegate tasks to the cloud for asynchronous execution while preserving context and progress.
The update supports developers using editors built on Microsoft Visual Studio Code, such as Cursor, and extends to other IDEs with compatible architectures; Codex is available across IDEs and the CLI, and users with a ChatGPT subscription can use it without configuring API keys. A refreshed UI, new commands, and numerous bug fixes accompany the release, with expanded capabilities including automatic review of new GitHub pull requests or receiving Codex feedback by mentioning @codex in a PR, according to OpenAI.
