Canada Privacy Commissioner investigates Crime Stoppers breach
The Privacy Commissioner of Canada has opened an investigation into a cybersecurity incident linked to Crime Stoppers programs across Canada, as disclosed by the office. The probe focuses on Navigate360, the commercial firm that provides and manages the tip-management platform used by Canadian Crime Stoppers chapters, and will examine the security safeguards in place at the time of the breach to assess compliance with Canada’s federal private-sector privacy law, PIPEDA.
The OPC says it is engaging with both Crime Stoppers and Navigate360 to ensure appropriate responses, containment of the breach, measures to reduce harm to those affected, and steps to prevent future incidents.
The OPC’s involvement stems from PIPEDA’s application to private-sector activities, although Crime Stoppers is a not-for-profit organisation, meaning PIPEDA generally does not apply to it. The office notes that, while the matter is under active investigation, it cannot provide further details at this time. The OPC’s engagement is described as offering expertise and guidance to address the breach and protect Canadians’ personal information, with a focus on breach containment and risk reduction for those impacted.
