The Silver Jubilee: Wikipedia Inks Landmark AI Deals with Meta, Microsoft, and Amazon
According to Wikimedia Enterprise, Wikipedia’s monetisation drive is expanding as a 25th anniversary initiative sees technology giants such as Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Mistral AI, and Perplexity join the collaboration to access Wikipedia’s content via premium subscriptions for AI training and real-time information retrieval. The arrangement marks a shift from public interfaces and free APIs to a high-throughput data conduit intended to meet large-scale demands.
Wikipedia hosts over 65 million articles across 300 languages and attracts about 15 billion monthly views, underscoring the value of the knowledge base to AI developers. Selena Deckelmann, Chief Product and Technology Officer at the Wikimedia Foundation, emphasised the continuing importance of “human-driven” knowledge in the age of AI.
The partnership builds on Wikimedia Foundation’s earlier move in 2022 to secure Google as its inaugural enterprise client, and it arrives alongside other announced partners including Ecosia and Perplexity, with the overall push described as a strategic financial lifeline for the project. Founders and sponsors, including Jimmy Wales, are set to participate in anniversary events that commemorate the site’s heritage and future trajectory.
