Ukrainian Conti Ransomware Suspect Extradited to US from Ireland
A Ukrainian national accused of helping run Conti, one of the world’s most damaging ransomware operations, is now in US custody after being extradited from Ireland. Oleksii Oleksiyovych Lytvynenko, 43, made his first court appearance in the Middle District of Tennessee to face charges tied to the Conti group. Prosecutors allege that between 2020 and 2022, Lytvynenko helped spread Conti ransomware worldwide, with the group infiltrating computer systems, locking critical files and demanding cryptocurrency payments.
According to the Department of Justice, he is charged with computer fraud conspiracy and wire fraud conspiracy, carrying a maximum penalty of 5 years and 20 years in prison respectively if convicted; the DOJ press release notes that an indictment charging four other Conti conspirators was unsealed in September 2023 in the Middle District of Tennessee.
The FBI estimates the group carried out more than a thousand attacks across 47 US states, Puerto Rico, and over 30 countries, collecting about 150 million dollars in ransom payments, making Conti one of the most aggressive operations of its kind before it broke apart in 2022.
