Free Xbox Cloud Gaming with Ads: Microsoft Tests New Tier with Session and Quality Limits
According to The Verge, Microsoft is already testing a free, ad-supported version of Xbox Cloud Gaming that will run a selection of its own titles alongside curated “Xbox Retro Classics” and rotating “Free Play Days” games. The free tier is expected to impose significant limits, including several minutes of advertising before a session, a maximum of one hour per session, and up to five sessions per month during the testing phase.
The service will cap streaming at 1080p for the free tier, while 1440p remains exclusive to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, with the model likely relying on ads to offset operating costs and create new monetisation opportunities. Microsoft notes that, after its multi-year beta, Xbox Cloud Gaming is moving toward full commercial deployment and the free tier could be accessed on PCs, Xbox consoles, browsers, and handheld devices.
However, free users are expected to face longer queue times as higher-priority subscriptions receive preference, a factor that could influence early adoption and user tolerance.
