Gmail’s Identity Revolution: How to Change Your Email Address Without Losing Data
Gmail is reportedly moving towards letting users change their @gmail[.]com address without creating a new account, with the process described as being rolled out “gradually” and not yet available to many users. According to the updated documentation, account owners will be able to replace their existing Gmail address with another Gmail address, effectively changing their username while keeping the same account intact.
The old address will become an alias, with messages arriving in the same inbox and access to Google services continuing to work, and all existing data such as emails and photos remaining unaffected. However, the change comes with limits: the new address cannot be removed, another new Gmail address cannot be created for 12 months, and a maximum of three new addresses per account—four Gmail addresses in total when the original is counted—are allowed.
The update may not propagate everywhere instantly, and the previous address may still appear in legacy data such as calendar events created before the change, with the old address permanently tied to its owner.
