Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Unveiled: The Fastest Mobile Chip Powers Next-Gen Agentic AI
According to Qualcomm, at the Snapdragon Summit 2025 in Hawaii the company unveiled its next-generation flagship mobile platform—the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5—hailed as the world’s fastest mobile system-on-chip. Built on TSMC’s third-generation 3nm process (N3P) and designated SM8850-AC, it integrates a redesigned Oryon CPU, a new Adreno GPU architecture and a Hexagon NPU, delivering a 20% boost in CPU performance, a 23% uplift in GPU graphics and a 37% acceleration in AI inference.
The octa-core CPU features two Prime cores up to 4.6GHz and six Performance cores to 3.62GHz, while the three-slice Adreno GPU runs at 1.2GHz with 18MB of Adreno HPM cache. Memory supports up to 24GB of LPDDR5x at 5300MHz, paired with UFS 4.0 storage, and the platform confirms Armour for Armv9 ISA licensing with proprietary instructions.
It also marks on-device AI inference with a Hexagon NPU that uses dual Micro NPUs and supports Int2 and FP8 precision, enabling multimodal capabilities for real-time video and photography enhancements. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 will debut in late 2025 and early 2026 across flagship devices, with Xiaomi confirming a Xiaomi 17 series launch, and it moves AI processing closer to the user while emphasising privacy.
