The Invisible Brain: Inside Apple’s Secret Deal to “Apple-ify” Google Gemini
According to The Information, Apple has secured a high degree of autonomy in its partnership with Google Gemini, with the ability to perform “Independent Fine-tuning” that lets Apple refine the Gemini model in isolation while keeping the underlying architecture Google’s.
The collaboration is described as more than a simple API integration, with Apple also retaining control over the “persona” and logic of engagement that Siri uses, and prototypes suggesting Gemini-powered responses will bear no visible Google or Gemini branding to keep the experience distinctly Apple.
The article notes plans for a hybrid framework that combines Legacy Siri on-device capabilities for pragmatic tasks with cloud-based Gemini for more complex reasoning, enabling functions such as interpreting context to carry out actions like “message my mother” when a contact is not specified. It also highlights Apple’s aim to deliver a more direct, conversational form of AI—potentially including empathetic responses—while emphasising privacy protections through Private Cloud Compute and internal sovereignty.
A gradual rollout is anticipated, with foundational features in spring via iOS updates and more advanced capabilities, including conversational memory, at WWDC 2026 in June.
