Google Warns: AI Makes Cyber Threats Faster and Smarter by 2026

Google has released its Cybersecurity Forecast 2026 report, warning that AI will make cyber threats faster and smarter by 2026, with the threat landscape shaped by real-world data from Google Cloud security leaders, dozens of experts, analysts, researchers and frontline responders.

According to Google, adversaries will move from experimental AI adoption to widespread operational deployment, treating artificial intelligence as the norm in attack operations and boosting the speed, scope and effectiveness of campaigns across the full attack lifecycle.

The forecast highlights prompt injection as a critical emerging threat and anticipates a rise in targeted attacks designed to compromise enterprise AI systems through such techniques, alongside accelerating AI-enabled social engineering and voice cloning to impersonate executives and IT staff. Defenders counter with agentic AI, with AI agents treated as distinct digital actors requiring new IAM approaches and an “Agentic SOC” model to shift analysts toward high‑level analysis while AI handles routine tasks.

The report also flags ransomware with data theft, an on-chain cybercrime economy, and virtualization as rising targets, noting that nation-state activity from Russia, China and Iran, plus North Korea’s tallies of operations, shapes the evolving threat landscape for 2026.
