Google DeepMind Partners with CFS to Use AI for Optimizing SPARC Fusion Reactor Efficiency
Google DeepMind has announced a partnership with Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) to use AI technologies to optimise the operational efficiency of SPARC, the fusion reactor being developed by CFS. The Massachusetts-based company recently secured an $863 million funding round, with investors including NVIDIA, Google, and Breakthrough Energy Ventures, and participation from Morgan Stanley, Stanley Druckenmiller, Mitsui & Co., and Mitsubishi Corporation.
CFS is developing a prototype tokamak reactor that confines and compresses plasma with superconducting magnets, with the goal of achieving the world’s first net energy gain from fusion by 2027. In the collaboration, DeepMind will provide TORAX, an open‑source plasma simulator for rapid fusion simulations and millions of virtual experiments; AlphaEvolve, an AI agent system to explore simulated scenarios; and real‑time AI navigation systems to control plasma during SPARC’s full‑power operations.
The partnership aims to lay a foundation for intelligent, adaptive control systems in future fusion power plants, with Google itself also an investor in CFS.
