Fired techie admits sabotaging ex-employer, causing $862K in damage

A fired Ohio IT contractor has pleaded guilty to breaking into his former employer’s systems and causing $862K in damage after being fired, according to The Register. Maxwell Schultz, 35, impersonated another contractor to gain access to the company’s network after his credentials were revoked, and the attack took place on 14 May 2021, when he reset approximately 2,500 passwords. The incident reportedly affected thousands of employees and contractors across the US, denying them access to the company network.

The news was announced by US attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei, with local media citing Waste Management of Houston as the company involved. The story was published on 21 November 2025 by DataBreaches[.]Net.
