X (Twitter) Launches ‘Chat’ to Replace DMs, Adding E2E Encryption and Video Calling
X (Twitter) has formally unveiled its long-promised messaging platform, announcing on 15 November that Direct Messages will be replaced by a feature simply called Chat. According to X, the new Chat offers voice and video calling, file sharing, message editing and deletion, and enhanced privacy features such as end-to-end encryption and screenshot notifications.
The rollout will begin immediately to users on iOS and the web, with the Android version marked as “coming soon.” The company is developing a voice memo feature for future audio exchanges, and technical documentation shows that both group messages and media files can now be encrypted, though metadata remains unencrypted. Earlier this year, X launched a preliminary encrypted messaging version that was suspended in May due to unspecified issues, with the newly released version addressing several prior limitations.
