Apple Responds to iPhone 17 ‘Scratchgate’: New In-Store Cleaning and MagSafe Stand Adjustments
Apple has responded to concerns over scratches on iPhone 17 Pro display units by clarifying that most marks were impressions from MagSafe charging stands and by introducing adjustments across its retail outlets. According to a report by 9to5Mac, stores have been instructed to replace worn MagSafe charging stands and, in some new locations, adopt an improved design, such as silicone rings fitted to the charging stands’ metal edges at the Ginza flagship store in Tokyo to minimise direct friction.
For devices that already show impressions, Apple Stores staff have been told to revise daily cleaning protocols using a cleaning solution described as a saline compound to treat the backs of display devices and reduce residual traces. Some media experiments suggest a simple mixture of water and sea salt could be effective, though Apple has not disclosed the exact formula.
The issue is not exclusive to the iPhone 17, with similar cases reported for iPhone 16 display units attributed to MagSafe stands, and Apple’s swift adjustments underscore its focus on user experience and brand reputation.
